Overview
When playing darts it is important to get yoru dartboard and oche set up correctly. The bullseye on the board should be 5 feet 8 inches from the floor and the oche should be 7 feet 9 and one quarter inches away from the base of the wall which the board is attached to.
It is thought that the dart board has a design on it (i.e. the layout of the numbers) which is as perfect as you can get. If you were to look at three numbers adjacent to each other, and then look at the equivalent three diagonally opposite, the total would be very similar.
The first world championship was held in 1978 and was run by the British Darts Organisation (BDO). The inaugural event was held at the Heart of the Midlands nightclub in Nottingham. The following year it moved to the Jollees Caberet lub in Stoke where it was to stay until 1985. Since 1986 the BDO world championship has been held at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, Surrey.
In 1992 there was an acrimonious dispute between some of the top dart players and the governing body. This led to a breakaway group who created their own organisation which eventually ended up being called the Proessional Darts Corporation (PDC).
Since the split there have been two world championships which run simultaneously at the end of December / start of January. The current BDO world champion is Ted 'The Count' Hankey, whereas the current PDC champion is Phil 'The Power' Taylor.
